Changing Face of Sri Lankan Hotels

The Sri Lankan tourism industry has made great strides in the past 14 years with the tourist arrivals having grown at a compound annual growth rate of 9.32%, from a mere 400,410 tourists in the year 2000, the tourist arrival has hit 1,274,593 in 2013 (The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority – SLTDA). This increase in tourist arrivals has also shown a lot of promise in other related metrics such as tourist nights (which has shown a CAGR of 7.86%), Receipt per Tourist per Day (USD) (which has shown a CAGR of 4.28%), and Official Tourism Receipts (USD Mn.) (which has shown a CAGR of 12.49%). All these factors and metrics show a common pattern, where Sri Lanka has increasingly been able to attract more tourists and at the same time tourists who can spend more.

This growth cannot be sustained over such a long period if the suppliers of this industry had not improved and revolutionized their offerings. And the Sri Lankan hotels have been on top of their game by offering the right mix of everything a tourist wants. Sri Lanka being a compact island which is surrounded by the sea, has been a popular destination for sun and sand related tourism, but, the hotels in Sri Lanka have been successful in working together to create offerings that revolve around; heritage, beach, adventure, wildlife, business, and festivals (beach festivals, kite festivals, food festivals, etc.). The hotel industry has also worked with famous TV shows in promoting their capability and offerings (an example would be the fact that Sri Lanka hosted two episodes of Amazing Race).
